About San Mateo Custom Cabinets
San Mateo Custom Cabinets is a cabinetmaking outfit based here in San Mateo. Cabinetry is the only thing we do. We are not a general remodeling company that also hangs boxes, and we are not a showroom that orders somebody else's product and marks it up.
One Trade, One County
Every piece that leaves us is drawn to numbers taken inside somebody's house: a whole kitchen, a lone vanity squeezed between a doorway and a window, a bookcase built around a chimney, a garage wall that finally gets the bikes off the floor. We also take installation-only handoffs, where the boxes are already on the driveway and what is missing is a finish carpenter to set them right.
We stay close to home: San Mateo itself, plus the towns strung either side of it from Millbrae at the north end down to Redwood City at the south. That is not modesty. A job like this wants a measuring visit, usually a second look at one dimension before the saw runs, then several days back on site to fit the work. A wide map just bills the homeowner for windshield time. We break the region down town by town if you want to check yours.
Peninsula houses reward that narrowness. A 1954 ranch, a post-and-beam Eichler, a Craftsman with original stained trim, and a 1960s house on bay fill each misbehave in their own way the moment the old boxes are unscrewed. Having met all four already beats any brochure.
How the Work Actually Goes

Nothing about the sequence is improvised, and you can ask at any point what happens next. It opens with a visit to your house, at no charge, where we record what the room truly is rather than what the original plans claimed: wall lengths, ceiling height, where the studs and ducts sit, how far the floor has dropped since framing day.

Drawings follow. You see elevations, pick a wood and a door style, settle the finish, and choose what goes inside the boxes. No material is cut until you have seen all of it and put your name to a price.

Then the job moves to the bench, where cases are cut and assembled and the fronts are made. Sprayed finishes set the pace from there. A film hardens at its own speed, and hurrying it shows up months later as a mark nobody can buff out.

Fitting day closes it out. The old units are carried away, the new cases go up dead level, edges are cut to follow walls that were never straight to begin with, and the fronts are tuned by hand afterwards until nothing along the wall looks crooked.
Where We Talk You Out of Spending More
A cabinet shop makes more money on a bigger job, so treat this as a promise we can be held to. When your cases are still square and dry and the layout already suits how you cook, fresh doors and drawer fronts on the old boxes get you most of the change for a fraction of the spend, and that is what we will recommend. When a room is a plain rectangle with standard heights and the budget is tight, a catalog line is honest value, and we would rather point you at one than pretend otherwise.
The reverse holds too. If what you are picturing will not physically work (a second sink in a wall too short for it, cabinets in a garage bay that has to keep parking a car), you get that verdict at the visit, before money changes hands. Where cabinetry is not the trade you need, we say which trade is. We do not pull permits, move plumbing, or run circuits.
What You Can Count On
You pay nothing for the visit, and nothing for the pricing it produces. What you get back is written down and split into cabinetry, finish, hardware, and fitting, because one lump figure tells you nothing and cannot be held up against anybody else's.
Once work starts, the price holds unless the scope changes, and any change is discussed and agreed before anyone acts on it. Rot behind a sink base, a floor worse than it looked: older houses hide things. You hear about ours the day we find them, not in a bill at the end.
